If you walked into a room and handed your business card to a potential customer, they’d probably nod politely and ask a follow-up question.

But what if you handed that same information to an AI?

Would it understand what you actually do? Would it know who your ideal customer is? Would it get your tone, your offer, your edge?

Most businesses would be shocked by the answer.

Welcome to the AI-Optimised Business Card Test — a quick exercise that reveals whether your brand makes sense to the most powerful engines on the internet.

What is the AI Business Card Test?

It’s simple:

Take the single sentence or paragraph you use to describe your business, and paste it into ChatGPT with a prompt like:

“Based on this business description, who is their target customer, what do they sell, and what tone of voice do they use?”

Then ask:

“What type of customer questions could this business answer better than anyone else?”

You’re not just testing for understanding — you’re testing for clarity, resonance and relevance.

Why It Matters

AI tools are rapidly becoming the gatekeepers of customer attention. Whether someone’s using ChatGPT to research options, or Google’s AI Overview to skim results, your business needs to be machine-comprehensible, not just human-readable.

If AI can’t parse what you do, it won’t recommend you. And if it can’t confidently match you to a user query, you won’t even make the shortlist.

Clarity isn’t just a nice-to-have anymore. It’s currency. What Most Businesses Get Wrong

  • They use clever taglines instead of clear value propositions.

  • They cram in buzzwords and forget audience context.

  • They try to be all things to all people, so AI (and humans) don’t know who they’re really for.

Here’s the brutal truth: if your positioning is muddy, AI will guess. And it might guess wrong.

How to Pass the Test

  1. Strip it back. What do you actually do, and for whom? Say it plainly.

  2. Test it. Use ChatGPT or Claude to summarise your offer and ideal customer.

  3. Refine until it’s obvious. If the AI’s summary doesn’t match your intent, your messaging isn’t clear enough.

  4. Layer in your tone. Once the basics are solid, add back your personality – not before.

  5. Think structured. AI loves clarity and hierarchy. Bullets, headings, clean language.
